Gas Liquids Engineering (GLE) is currently carrying out detailed engineering on a major carbon capture project at the Co-op Ethanol Complex (CEC), in Saskatchewan, Alberta. The CO2 from this facility will be compressed, dehydrated, and processed, and transported by pipeline for sequestration using the Whitecap Resources CO2 pipeline network. Whitecap currently operates one of the largest anthropogenic carbon sequestration projects in the world, transporting CO2 from two major industrial emitters to their existing Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) hub located near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Whitecap is expanding their existing hub with approximately 200km of additional pipelines and new compression facilities to bring additional industrial CO2 sources to new sequestration wells. The CEC project represents the first emitter that will be tying onto Whitecap’s planned CO2 hub expansion. Approximately 500,000 tonnes/year of CO2 will be captured from Co-op Ethanol Complex, which will then be compressed using a reciprocating compressor, and dehydrated using a molecular sieve system. The CO2 will then be condensed, and distilled to the meet specifications of the Whitecap CO2 pipeline system. The distillation system facilitates oxygen removal, to ensure adequate corrosion mitigation for the selected pipeline material at the operating conditions. The sequestration-ready CO2 will then be pipelined as a dense-phase fluid within a carbon steel pipeline, rated for 15.5 MPag (2250 psig), to multiple new sequestration wells located east of Belle Plaine Saskatchewan. The project will be the first ethanol plant in Canada, and likely the first in North America, to geologically sequester its produced CO2.
GLE’s scope of work has included the process, mechanical, civil, instrumentation, drafting, procurement, project management, and regulatory support services on the project. GLE has additionally provided management support for the various 3rd party environmental assessment and land services required on the project. Equipment procurement is well underway, with an anticipated startup in 2024.
