Husky Energy – McMullen Oil Battery

Gas Liquids Engineering Ltd. (GLE) completed the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for Husky Energy for a central processing facility to treat 2600 m³/d of 16° API heavy crude oil. The Husky McMullen Battery was to be located near the hamlet of Wabasca in Northern Alberta. The facility was designed with two trains each capable of processing 800 m³/d of oil, 200 m³/d of water in emulsion and 300 m³/d of free water with some processing equipment common to both trains. Heavy oil would be trucked in from field locations and the treated crude oil is blended with condensate prior to being delivered to market by pipeline. Battery requirements for condensate diluent is received by pipeline. Produced water from field locations is also delivered to the Battery for injection into a water disposal well. The facility design includes:

  • Truck offloading facility with two positions for off-loading
  • Two internally coated Inlet Surge Tanks for each train.
  • Each tank has de-sanding facilities.
  • Process Transfer Pumps for: Emulsion, Produced Water, Black Water, Treater Feed, Treater Recycle, Off-spec Sales Oil, Sales Oil
  • Free Water Knock-out (FWKO) Feed Preheat Exchanger – One for each train
  • FWKO Tanks with de-sanding facilities – Two for each train
  • Treater Feed Preheat Exchanger – One for each train
  • Emulsion Treater – One for each train
  • Treater Produced Water Cooler – One for each train
  • Sales Oil Tanks – Two for each train
  • Tanks:
    • POP Tank – Collects oil from leaking pressure relief valves
    • Water Skim Tank – Tank to allow oil to separate from water and be recovered by skimming
    • Water Injection – Storage for water that will be injected into a disposal well
    • Slop Tank
    • With the exception of the Water Injection Feed Tank all of the other tanks have cone bottoms with de-sanding facilities
  • Vacuum Recovery System to recover vapours from the various tanks – Shared by both trains
  • Glycol Heating System – Shared by both trains
